Maestro Long Yu has spent his life building and leading great institutions to build cultural bridges, through music, between China and the West. Emerging from the barren years of China's Cultural Revolution, he founded a major orchestra (the China Philharmonic), which he still leads, alongside the Shanghai Symphony and Guangzhou Symphony, and he has launched two major music festivals.
COMPOSE 20:20, which he calls, “one of the most important projects in my life,” will by the year 2020, introduce 20 new works by Chinese classical composers to the West, and 20 new works by Western composers into China. There will be a recording, and this website will serve as a hub for conversation and discussion around the works, as well as a reference tool.
Because with new music, understanding is enhanced. Music is how we speak to each other without words. Like all languages, it evolves. So do we.
